USPS insures up to 50 dollars
To buy or not to buy insurance from USPS If your item is 50+ more I would highly recommend getting insurance for USPS. You never know what can happen. The only time I would not buy insurance for an item if it's relative cheap and easily replaced. Possibly clothing. For books and other media you can use media mail.
