USPS insures up to 50 dollars

To buy or not to buy insurance from USPS



If your item is 50+ more I would highly recommend getting insurance for USPS. You never know what can happen. The only time I would not buy insurance for an item if it's relative cheap and easily replaced. Possibly clothing.

For books and other media you can use media mail. Which is fairly cheap way to ship books.
